Frequently Asked Questions

  • Do I need a building permit from the town?

The only type of construction project that requires a building permit at the Farmington town level is the construction of a new 1 or 2-family residential housing unit. This will require that you submit the proper paperwork through the General Engineer Company (GEC) and pass a final inspection. Contact info for General Engineering can be found here.

If a new residential housing unit is being built off of a Farmington Town Road, a driveway permit is also required from the town. Submit the application form to Mike Hesse, Town Chair, to begin this process.

No other building project requires the approval of the town, unless LaCrosse County determines the project must obtain variance or conditional use approval. If this is the case, contact Crystal Sbraggia, Clerk, to be placed onto the next Plan Commission Agenda.

Although the town does not require inspections of any building projects outside of new residential homes, for the safety of all it is encouraged that residents seek out professional GEC approval for any type of construction.

Depending on the project, additional permits may be required from the County Health, Highway Department, or Land Conservation Departments.

  • Do I need a zoning permit?

The Town of Farmington has been under La Crosse County Zoning since 1953. Zoning permits are required for construction of most structures by La Crosse County, including residential, commercial and agricultural. This is to ensure the structure is appropriate to the zoning and size of the parcel being built on, as well as setbacks from property lines and roads.

A zoning permit is required to be obtained before a building permit will be issued by General Engineering Company (GEC) on behalf of the Town for a new 1 or 2-family home, or the State for a commercial building.

A zoning permit is also required if the roofline of a residential unit or point of ingress or egress is being altered, i.e. a window is being converted to a patio door, or a door to a window.

An information only, no cost permit is required for all agricultural structures to ensure setbacks are not being encroached. This includes barns, machine sheds, grain bins and related structures.

Depending on the project, additional permits may be required from the County Health, Highway Department, or Land Conservation Departments.

You can find additional information here.
